If the world your players are in does not currently have animistic spirits, it might look like the promise land to this horde of refugee spirits. The appearance of animistic spirits might also be the thin edge of the wedge for an invasion. If the inhabitants of a netherplane have gotten a dupe or ally to open a long-closed portal, then dark spirits might be entering the land and taking up residence in trees, boulders, wells, ponds, and other very inconvenient places.
A quest to find the source of the dark spirits, and seal it once found, might make an excellent quest. If you add animistic spirits to your campaign, as a retrofit or at design time, then they may be rare or common, minor features of the world or major powers, benevolent or hostile, independent or co-dependent with the character races.
