CalArts today offers more than 70 comprehensive degree programs in the visual, performing, media and literary arts. Programs are optimized for a new kind of artist: One who goes beyond mere aesthetics and expertise and one who thinks about the way their practice engages with the world at large. The Acting Program offers classically centered training with an eye toward the future, and is designed for preparing young artists for the performance challenges of the 21st Century.
View Program. The MFA African Music and Dance Specialization is an intensive course of study in polyrhythmic music, dance and song, drawing principally from Western African traditions. View Specialization. The Applied Arts Program offers intensive professional training in scenic art, visual communications and art direction. A forum for the sustained exploration of possibilities in cultural production, the Program in Art pushes students to question conventional ideas about contemporary art.
The Art and Technology Program encourages students to cultivate creative strategies, technical competencies and critical thinking skills while exploring and developing new applications of technology and media within a contemporary art practice. Brass studies at CalArts is unique and innovative, with a curriculum designed to further develop the role of brass instruments in the present and looking toward the future.
Building from a traditional brass foundation, these studies focus on contemporary brass works and performance practices, while also working to develop a radical expansion of the idiom. The BFA Program in Character Animation is designed for students who seek an understanding of the art of character performance and storytelling in animation. Collaborative Keyboard studies prepares advanced students for careers in various collaborative keyboard disciplines. This course of study concentrates on multiple aspects of collaborative performance, including work in vocal and instrumental chamber music, conducted ensembles and opera, while also refining repertoire knowledge and language facility.
The Costume Design Program encourages students to break with traditional notions of costume design—and think instead in terms of garments that expand or otherwise reshape the physical space of performers. The Creative Writing MFA Program views writing as an art form best practiced alongside the other arts, and students benefit from having access to the CalArts community of artists as their peers and fellow travelers.
The BFA Program in Dance is an intensive, four-year education in which students develop high-level professional skills in a variety of dance practices.

Her art practice is greatly inspired by artist-run film labs and DIY microcinema scenes. Andrew Bedows is a producer, pianist, composer, and arranger currently studying at CalArts. He has done scores for animated shorts that have received acceptance and awards at many film and animation festivals, and has played at music festivals like the Bucktown Music and Arts Festival and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
He is originally from Chicago, IL. Ian Stahl is a multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer, producer and educator based in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently a house engineer at Kingsize Soundlabs, performs with his band, Cilience, and was adopted by two stray cats named Patches and Cheeto. Charles Burns is a saxophonist, composer, and educator.
Born in Florida, raised in New Jersey, he lived in England for two years, and now loves living in Southern California. As a saxophonist and a composer, he has been a regular feature on stages, in concert halls, at festivals, and in clubs throughout the world. As an educator, he loves to empower his students and to help them find confidence and courage within themselves.
Ari is a composer, arranger, educator, and bass player in the Los Angeles area. Ari primarily plays jazz and classical music, but loves hip-hop and punk music too! A former Sundance fellow, their work focuses on comedy, coming of age, and fantasy.
When not animating or teaching, you can find them looking for interesting dogs around LA. Lately, they prefer to work with non-fiction animation on a multiplane or hand-stitch embroidery for fun. Mia is a multimedia animator, teaching artist, and East LA native.
She is especially looking forward to seeing all the exciting work her students will create! Rachel Shin is an illustrator, and visual development artist based in Los Angeles, California. Rachel is a lover of ramen and occasionally a parent to foster puppies! Sarah is a writer, editor, and educator from the San Fernando Valley. Her work has been published both digitally and in print, and she's displayed her zines at art shows and book fairs across the city.
Her favorite things to write about are nostalgia, sisterhood, and language. Matthew Bussa is a poet and educator from Berkeley, CA. His writing explores the overlap between poetry, performance, and literary citation.
As a creative writing instructor, he relishes any opportunity to collaborate, improvise, and go out into the world with a notebook, writing "away from the desk. Their main studies center intimate labor, queer theory, and ethnic studies.
They love children's books, Animal Crossing, and trying out nail art designs. Hao Feng is an actor hailing from Atlanta, GA. He recently completed his M. Aside from acting and teaching, Hao enjoys martial arts, piano, and photography, but most important of all, eating. Tom Zhang is an LA-based teaching artist who uses humor to explore race, history, and his Chinese American identity. This mostly means that he makes theater performances with a lot of jokes about growing up Asian in Florida.
